Xbox One Controller

Most people would admit that the Microsoft have the upper hand in the current gen consoles when it comes to the controller. It looks slick, it’s comfortable and just ticks all the boxes. So what changes are Microsoft making to their Xbox One counterpart?

Not many is the answer. Due to the success of the previous Xbox 360 controller, Microsoft have decided to stay with the winning formulae with just a few changes here and there.

Firstly, they’ve added new impulse triggers to bring a more realistic experience to gamers. For example, when playing a shooting game, the vibration will start from the bottom of the controller when you pull the trigger and work its way up to bring a sense of realism to the game.

Secondly, they’ve improved chat audio to allow for clearer sound when playing with friends.

Thirdly, thumbstick improvements allow for better grip and accuracy and triggers and bumpers are designed for quicker access.

And finally, batteries fit inside the controller body allowing your hands more room to grip the controller. Not to mention that it charges while you play and when in standby in less than 4 hours.

So apart from a  few changes here and there, we know what to expect from this critically acclaimed controller which on the whole is a very smart move from Microsoft.

So what about the PS4 Controller?

Dualshock 4 Controller

Out of the two it’s safe to say that Sony had more work to do when improving their controller, and boy have they done it.

They introduce the Dualshock 4, a much more advanced piece of equipment than it’s predecessor. With many more changes made than the Xbox Controller (and rightly so) it brings a whole different look to what we are used to seeing. So where do i begin?

In the centre of the controller they’ve now added a trackpad. Though they haven’t revealed all it’s capable of yet, we do know that this funky piece of technology is the future of PS4 gaming.

The introduction of LEDs offers a simpler way to easily identify players and quickly see useful game information, like when a character is low on health or has taken major damage.

The new Share button allows games to instantly share all triumphs and accomplishments by streaming live gameplay to Ustream or uploading recorded videos to Facebook.

Changes to the shape of the controller and length of the handles means it’s more comfortable to hold, while improved analogue sticks and buttons mean more precise control.

And lastly, the inclusion of multiple vibration motors give games a greater degree of expression and heighten the sense of immersion for players.

So lots there to take in, but what controller is looking the winner for you? Vote in the poll below.
